MUSIC - 2025

Music is part of the very fabric of our maritime heritage. Ballads and sea shanties were all part and parcel of life at sea and on shore and their influence can been heard in the music of today. There is debate about their origins, but historians have traced them back well into the 15th century. With close ties to folk music of the British Isles, the instruments, lyrics, and melodies remain popular with modern audiences.

At the Sail, Power, and Steam Museum, we honor this music and are proud to have built an audience who shares our love of traditional music. From Sunday Music Jams, to concerts of internationally known musicians, we invite you to join us in these musical offerings throughout the year

A native of Texas and now a midcoast resident, Jimmy Moreland sings a combination of country, Irish music, and so much more. He'll be singing from his upcoming album to be released this fall. A regular in the museum's Sunday music jams, we're dedicating a full evening to enjoying this talented artist with a rich voice and unique style.

An enthusiastic supporter of the museum, all proceeds from the evening will be donated in support of museum programming.

May 31st at 7pm: Paddy Mills
Click here for tickets - $20

An award winning folksinger/songwriter, Paddy’s songs are as salty as the Maine coast he calls home. He has been spinning yarns and singing his tunes throughout New England and beyond for more than twenty five years, wearing a hole into the top of his guitar while collecting stories, songs and friends along the way.

Having grown up a "wharf rat"  in the small fishing village of Owls Head, his songs are anchored to the imagery, characters, and traditions of coastal Maine.

June 21, 7pm: Janie Meneely and Rob van Sante
Click here for tickets - $20

Janie Meneely & Rob van Sante present an evening of music as lively
as it is eclectic, with songs culled from maritime traditions old and new
mixed with contemporary ballads about the ways of today’s world.

Their songs—and their on-stage banter, for that matter—are laced with humor
(sometimes bawdy!) and spill out with galvanizing energy. Whether they sing of long-ago tragedy at sea, retell a campfire ghost story or offer up a song of social justice, their music invites audience participation, and that, to their mind, remains the most gratifying aspect of any given performance.
July 12, 7pm: Larry Kaplan
$20 - Click here for tickets!

One of New England’s leading contemporary folk song makers, Larry Kaplan’s recognition continues to spread internationally.

His well-known songs are loved and sung by audiences and fellow artists alike, poignant observations of the human condition, honest, so very singable, always memorable.

July 19, 7pm: Castlebay
Click here for tickets - $20

Castlebay has been musically weaving together the heritage of New England and the Celtic lands since 1987. Members Julia Lane and Fred Gosbee have loved and researched traditional music for most of their lives and blend history, legend and experience into their personable performance style.

Their concerts feature poignant ballads sung in Lane's ethereal soprano and Gosbee's rich baritone interspersed with joyous dance tunes played on Celtic harp, guitar, fiddle and tin whistle. Castlebay treats the audience to a musical journey through time and across the Atlantic.

August 2, 7pm: Geoff Kaufman
Click here for tickets - $20

Kaufman’s music is described as “Acoustic music … with a pinch of salt,” and for
the past 28 years, he has been leading audiences to find truth, humor, and beauty
in folk music.

Songs of the sea, songs of the earth, songs of the heart and the spirit – all of these
are in Kaufman’s musical ditty bag. Ancient ballads, work songs and songs of love;
poignant songs of people in struggle, humous glimpses of human foibles, and
insights into history – all of these are to be woven into Geoff’s concerts. Above all, at the core of Geoff’s performances is his rich tenor voice and his
exuberant love of singing which entices audiences to sing along, sharing in the
exhilaration of full-throated vocalization if they wish.

August 31, 7pm: Gabriel Donohue
Click here for tickets - $25

Donohue is known from the dance halls of Dublin to the East Wing of the White House to the Irish pubs of Manhattan. He performs primarily on guitar and piano but also plays instruments ranging from bouzouki/mandolin to Irish and exotic percussion.

He performs throughout the USA both solo and along with a cadre of well-known musicians, including a 3-year tour with the Grammy Award winning Chieftains.  He has recorded with the Boston Pops, Eileen Ivers, Joanie Madden, James Keane, Sean Quinn, Brian Conway, John Whelan, Karen Mal, Aoife Clancy, and Liam Clancy, always dazzling audiences with his combination of Irish, Celtic and lively musical genres.
