The Story of the Rekord
You may have seen her in the early years of the Sail, Power, and Steam Museum. After a long history as a working boat in Norway, lengthened a few times, crossed the Atlantic, and eventually found Captain Jim Sharp and a home in Maine where she delivered coal. Moved through several new owners, and finally back to Captain Jim and the Sail, Power, and Steam Museum. Historic vessel 'Bowdoin' to visit Rockland in honor of captain who kept her afloat (09/18/19)
The story of Captain Jim Sharp's sighting of the historic but dilapidated Schooner Bowdoin sitting at a dock in Connecticut and her subsequent salvage and reconstruction is legendary. She now resides at Maine Maritime Academy as a sail training vessel, a fitting home for this vessel that took Admiral McMillan north to explore the unknown arctic. In the summer of 2019, she visited Rockland Harbor in Captain Jim's honor. Click here for PenBay Pilot article. |
Captain Jim Sharp to Receive Windjammers' Lifetime Appreciation Award (August 30, 2017)
After a lifetime of sailing Penobscot Bay and (far) beyond, rebuilding more than 30 vessels, and showcasing the coasts of Maine as a schooner Captain Jim was honored in 2017 with a Lifetime Appreciation Award by the Maine Windjammer Association. Click here for the Bangor Daily News article. |
